A stunning performance.

For much of 2026, and the latter part of 2025, Frances Tiafoe had seemingly been straining to get back to the form when he was chasing ranking points to reach the top 10. Even reaching the quarterfinals at most events was like a small victory. The conversation changed against Taylor Fritz in the final of the Halle Open, though.

Fritz, the more accomplished and higher-ranked American, seems like a heavy favorite entering the final match of the tournament. While Tiafoe had won a grass-court event before, that was in 2023 at the Boss Open, which, in tennis years, feels like decades ago.

Fritz's play in recent years had been augmented when the grass-court part of the tennis season began. He hadn't yet challenged to win Wimbledon, but many fans might have thought he might eventually have a chance to do so.

Now, after his performance at the Halle Open, some fans might believe Tiafoe might have a chance to do some damage at the 2026 Wimbledon. His best finish was the fourth round in 2022, but this year's field is a bit more open with Carlos Alcaraz missing the major with a wrist injury.

In Halle, an evenly played first set felt like Tiafoe had the advantage. Fritz is normally a precision server who gets wins in that facet quite quickly and easily. Tiafoe was surprisingly staying with him a bit. Then, at 3-all, Tiafoe got a break of his countryman, and was serving so well himself that he kept holding easily to win set one 6-4.

To open the second set, Frances Tiafoe got another break of Taylor Fritz and appeared headed to a somewhat shockingly easy win at the Halle Open. He just needed to keep the same form on his serve, one that, through the first five games of set two, he had landed 72 percent of his first serves and won 96 percent of those points. He hadn't come close to facing a break point yet.

Fritz then got back to serving with his usual excellence, but Tiafoe didn't drop in his form, either. At 5-4, and just a little over an hour into the match, Tiafoe, who won 40 out of 47 of his serve points in the match, held and took the set 6-4 to take the title. He became the first American to win the crown in Halle.

With the victory, Frances Tiafoe is back to No. 20 in the live ATP rankings. He won his first title since 2023, and he is as set up as he could be for a deep run at Wimbledon. A win in London would be shocking, but he is in his best form in years. He might be ready to stun the tennis world.
