Angelique Kerber Wins, Fights for Strong 2019 Start

German tennis star Angelique Kerber wins her opening singles match at the 2019 Hopman Cup. She is gearing up for action on the WTA Tour.

Angelique Kerber is alongside partner and rising ATP Tour star Alexander Zverev this week at the Hopman Cup. The pair are off to an impressive start, defeating Team Spain 3-0 to open their play. On the singles side of the field, Kerber takes down another great tennis player in Garbine Muguruza. The German takes their meeting in three sets, earning a hard-fought 6-2 3-6 6-3 victory to give her team the boost.

Zverev would win his singles match before the pair would also claim victory in mixed doubles. Also seeing early success at the Hopman Cup is Team Switzerland, consisting of tennis legend Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic.

The singles win over Muguruza is huge. The Spanish tennis star has been a top player in women’s singles in recent years, winning at both the French Open and then Wimbledon.

Last year, it was Kerber who tasted victory at Wimbledon. HERE, Kerber reflects on her first ever Wimbledon title. It was a moment that put her into an even more elite club.

We can now say definitively that Kerber is here to bring on the 2019 WTA Tour. Entering the year as the world number two in women’s singles, she could easily reach number one in the near future. Success in the coming weeks, including at the Australian Open might just put her over the top. Currently, Simona Halep is the world number one.
